My role at Campwise was to plan and teach guitar lessons to groups of 14 children whilst managing the teaching assistant. Groups were arranged by age and taught differently to match theoretical understanding and physical capability e.g. I gave older groups separate lessons on theory and paired song writing to develop their teamwork and communication skills as well as collaborative learning. However with younger groups I focused on instant reward learning so they stayed interested and engaged. I adapted each lesson to cater for the individual needs of every child to enable them to demonstrate progression, development and above all else, want to learn.
This was challenging but extremely rewarding as I was able to see all my hard work either by inspiring a child to keep learning the guitar at home or watching a group perform on stage, knowing that they gained the confidence and skills thanks to my successful, exciting and stimulating teaching.
Another key aspect of my job was to act as a counselor, along with 3 other members of staff, for a group of 14 male campers. Throughout my time at Camp Wise, I acted as a counselor for many children from a range of faiths, socio-economic backgrounds and ages. My duty to the children was to: make sure they got up and arrived at lessons on time; make them feel safe; welcome and included in all parts of camp life; deal with any and all issues they had and to work cooperatively with the other counselors. Doing all I could to make sure they had the best 3 weeks of their lives.
Being a positive role model was not only important for the campers in your care, it was important to be a role model for every single camper and every single staff member.
