Reflection on GPP
This professional placement was my first teaching placement and the first time I had ever taught and been responsible for a whole class. The experience was an extremely positive one and with help from school based tutor, (as well as all the pupils and other members of staff) I was able to progress in my professional development as well develop my confidence in teaching.
During the placement I taught the topics of shape and space, data handling and number in maths. In literacy I taught newspapers, instruction writing, letter writing and book making. In science I covered the topic of thermal insulators along with scientific enquiry. The topic of WW2 (specifically Anne Frank) was taught in cross curricular history. I also taught P.E., art, P.S.H.E., R.E., guided reading and D.T. lessons. I was involved in the planning and organisation of the school Christmas production.
From this placement I learnt how to effectively: plan suitable lessons as well as find and adapt appropriate resources; differentiate teaching and learning to cater for SEN, EAL, PP, G&T, LA, MA and HA; use a range of teaching styles (discussion groups, pair share, targeted questioning); develop children's ideas and make links between related concepts; use successful behaviour management and reward systems; use assessment for learning to plan subsequent lessons that cater to the children's needs and development relationships with the pupils rooted in mutual respect. Everything that I learnt whilst on practice allowed me to progress the pupils in their learning. It allowed me to make the class a fun, safe and engaging learning environment where the children loved to learn and loved to work with each other.
