For the maths lessons I taught on GPP I followed my school's policy and planned four different activities for the pupils to rotate around for a total of two lessons. There were four groups in the class based on ability and these tasks needed to be differentiated for each ability.
One of the stations always involved I.C.T. In one form or another. For one of the lessons I used this app. Pupils had to beat the clock and answer all twenty questions as quickly as possible; they could choose which of the four functions to use. The faster pupils answered the questions the higher the score they got.
Pupils really enjoyed playing this game and were very engaged. I think they enjoyed it so much because they enjoyed the competition and loved trying to beat each other's high score. It really helped the pupils learn their table facts and made sure they were able to quickly recall them.
Simple sums was really useful when teaching a particular pupils with EAL who couldn't access English at all. He was very talented at maths and the pupils would celebrate when he beat his high score. Simple sums can also be differentiated for ability e.g. easy, medium and hard.
