Comic Life
Using Comic Life to make a chronology of Anne Frank's life proved to be a very fun, exciting and engaging way of learning about timelines and Anne Frank. Pupils were already familiar with the diary of Anne Frank and I thought about various ways of consolidating what they had learnt. I decided that the pupils were going to make a comic book on the iPad.
First of all I gave pupils facts about Anne Frank's life which they had to put into the right order. Then they had to pick out the four most important facts in their opinion. These facts were written in text boxes on each picture. Pupils then had to research pictures that related to the facts that they had chosen.
Another great teaching point I was able to focus on when creating the comic books was the use of direct speech. My class had been struggling with punctuating speech and had trouble putting speech marks in the correct place. They could see that the speech was coming directly from a persons mouth and developed a better understanding of what direct speech looked like. After this lesson they had progressed in their use of speech in writing and the accuracy of their punctuation improved.
Other ways Comic Life could be incorporated into the curriculum could be in: PSHE e.g. an anti-bullying comic; maths to design a topic poster; science to show the method of an experiment or in P.E. to demonstrate the rules of a game.
